Dog Food

Dog Food
Most dog owners feed their dogs either of the following:
1. Dog Kibbles (commonly known as Dried Food)
2. Canned Food (commonly known as Wet Food)
3. BARF Diet (Bone And Raw Food in long)
4. Dehydrated Raw Food
5. Home Cooked Food (HCF for short)

For this entry, I will mainly blog on kibbles.

Dog Kibbles

I used to think that any brand of kibbles will do just fine for my dog. I used to think that all brands of dog food were more or less the same, and the only difference was the popularity of the brand, the flavours of the food available, and the packaging. I thought that the difference in pricing was a result of competition among different manufacturing companies.

I was so wrong.

The kind of dog kibbles you feed, will result in the quality of your dog's health in the long run. I've read how some brands of dog kibbles had such high level of salt, that may caused high blood pressure, kidney stones and kidney problems. This is especially so when the dog has such genetic heredity, lacks exercise and/or the amount of water consumed is minimal. These are health conditions that will not take place with immediate effects, but probably after years of feeding that certain brand of dog food.

Thus, I personally view the purchasing of dog food as a form of investment in the long run; I'd rather invest in a good brand of dog food (which cost quite a bit in Singapore) and in return pay lesser for medical bills when my dog is older, than to pay lesser for a dog food now and pay more for medical bills when my dog ages.

Some brands of food cost cheaper, because they are more of a filler. In short, fillers are mainly carbohydrate that are used to fill your dog's hunger, and they benefit minimally from it. Other brands of food may be manufactured with by-products. (Note: By-products are food or meat deemed unfit for human consumption.) Certain brands of food may cost more, but that is probably because of the higher nutritional contents which may benefit your dog better.

For dog owners who think that the quality of dog food is of little or no important, you might want to read the following article, which is a lawsuit against several dog food manufacturers, due to the kind of ingredients they add into the production of the food.

Dog Kibble Reviews

I found the dog food reviews form hubpages really useful. However, a couple of dog food listed there are not available in Singapore. I'll extract and consolidate the reviews of dog food that are commonly found in Singapore.

If you are keen to find certain brand of food that is not listed here, you can do so at hubpages, under Dog Nutrition - Dog Food Comparison. Scroll down to the alphabet listing, and click on the links available.

My Dogs

Personally, I feed my dogs (Dick Van Patten's) Natural Balance Duck and Potato kibbles, not only because it can be found in most pet stores, but mainly because it has scored
10/10 rating for the review. Moreover, it has a 10% promotional discount that has been ongoing for quite some time. With the purchase of each packet of food, comes with a membership that will entitle you to a 10% discount in future, when the promotion ends.
